Kudos to Kennedy
It was a high school team that no one expected to succeed...but it just kept on winning and winning. The baseball team from Warren’s John F. Kennedy Catholic School defied the naysayers and captured the Ohio state championship in Division IV on June 13. Eastwood Mall will honor the team for this achievement at a victory rally on Thursday, July 1. The event will take place at 11 AM in the mall’s center court. Among the dignitaries on hand to congratulate the team will be Warren Mayor Doug Franklin and Bishop David Bonnar of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown. As part of the celebration, the Cafaro Foundation will present the school with a donation. The public is invited to attend.
The odds were stacked against the Eagles this season. There were only eleven players on the team, the minimum number permitted by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). There was only one senior player on the roster. Head Coach Jim Ciambotti was only in his first year with the team. Just the same, the Eagles blanked Van Wert Lincolnview 4 – 0 in the championship game, winning the school’s first-ever state baseball title.
